Hill had pitched only 28 major-league games through 1926, spread across six scattered seasons, when Pittsburgh put him in its rotation. He responded in 1927 by going 22-11 with a 3.24 earned run average across 277 innings, completing 22 games and throwing two shutouts.
Ten seasons gave him a 49-33 record, eight saves, 264 strikeouts and a 3.44 earned run average in 787 innings. He started 85 of his 147 appearances and completed 47. More than a third of his career innings came during that single 1927 season.
Hill debuted with Pittsburgh in 1915 and made eight appearances for the Giants in 1922 before returning to the Pirates. He followed his breakout with a 16-10 record and 237 innings in 1928. St. Louis acquired him during 1929, and he finished there in 1930. He died in 1990, at ninety-four.
