He was 11-14 in 1949 with a 2.50 earned run average, the lowest in the league — a record that shows exactly what kind of club he pitched for. Twelve seasons gave him 92 wins against 107, a 3.68 earned run average, 1,591 innings and 15 shutouts.
Leo Durocher started him in the first game of the 1951 World Series, three days after the Giants had won the pennant on Bobby Thomson's home run, and he beat the Yankees 5-1 with a complete game. New York won one more and then lost the last three.
Three years in the Army took 1943, 1944 and 1945 out of the middle of his career. He finished with Baltimore and Milwaukee in 1954 and 1955. He went home to Menasha, Wisconsin, and died there in 1975, at fifty-five. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him.
