Born August 11, 1907
Hartsville, SC, USA
He won 211 games and lost 222 — one of only a handful of pitchers to reach 200 wins with a losing record — across twenty seasons, 3,759 innings and 246 complete games. He lost twenty or more in three seasons and won twenty or more in three others, sometimes consecutively: 20-16 in 1938 for a St. Louis club that lost 92, then 20-11, then 21-5.
The moving is what he is remembered for. He played for nine franchises and joined Washington on five separate occasions, which nobody else has done with any club. He called everyone Bobo, including himself, and it became his name.
He won two games in the 1940 World Series for Detroit, pitching the fifth on the day after his father died and the seventh on one day's rest, and lost the seventh 2-1. Four All-Star selections. He was on twelve writers' ballots between 1960 and 1973 without ever passing 33 votes.
