Herman Long Marquee

He committed 1,096 errors, which is the record and always will be, and the men who watched him thought he was the best shortstop in the National League for a decade. Both things follow from the same conditions: bare hands or thin gloves, unkempt infields, and a range that took him to balls nobody else reached.

Sixteen seasons gave him 2,129 hits, 1,456 runs, 537 stolen bases, 342 doubles and a .277 average. He led the league with 149 runs in 1893 and with 12 home runs in 1900, and played on the Boston clubs that won five pennants in the 1890s.

He died of tuberculosis in 1909, at forty-three, four years after his last game. Six writers' ballots and two committees gave him no more than fifteen votes.
