Brooklyn Grooms
The Grooms took their name from the number of players who married in a short span, which the papers of the day found worth naming a club over. Five seasons at 362-319, with a best of 1892 at 95-59 and no pennant.
John Ward managed the first two seasons at 156-135 while playing shortstop, having earlier founded the players' union and led the revolt that produced the Players' League. Dave Foutz managed the last three.
Three Hall of Famers played here: Ward, Dan Brouthers and Willie Keeler, who was traded to Baltimore in 1894 and became the best hitter in the league there. Eastern Park was its ground. The club became the Bridegrooms, then the Superbas, and eventually the Dodgers.
