Shotton returned to a major-league dugout with Brooklyn in 1947 and guided the club to a 94-60 record and the National League pennant. Two years later his Dodgers went 97-57 and won another pennant. He managed Brooklyn through 1950 after earlier managing Philadelphia for six seasons.
Before managing, he spent fourteen seasons as an outfielder and collected 1,338 hits, 746 runs, 293 stolen bases and 713 walks with a .271 average. He led the American League in walks twice, drawing 99 for the Browns in 1913 and 110 in 1916.
His best hit total was 174 in 1916, when he also scored 97 runs and stole 41 bases. Shotton played most of his 1,387 games for the St. Louis Browns before finishing with the Cardinals in 1923. Across his full managerial record, the database shows 697 wins and 764 losses in 1,469 games. He died in 1962, at seventy-seven.
