Lloyd Brown Marquee

b. December 25, 1904 · Brooklyn Robins 1925, Washington Senators 1928–1932, St. Louis Browns 1933, Boston Red Sox 1933, Cleveland Indians 1934–1937, Philadelphia Phillies 1940

He was 16-12 in 1930, 15-14 with a 3.20 earned run average in 1931 and 15-12 in 1932 for Washington clubs that kept finishing second or third. That December he was one of three players sent to St. Louis for Goose Goslin, which is the kind of trade that tells you what a club thought of a pitcher.

Twelve seasons gave him 91 wins against 105, a 4.20 earned run average, 1,693 innings, 77 complete games and 10 shutouts. He was a small left-hander — 5 feet 9 — who worked slowly and threw a curve, and he pitched in relief as often as he started in the second half of his career.

Cleveland had him for four years, and he came back at thirty-five for two games with the 1940 Phillies, three years after his previous appearance. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1974, at sixty-nine.
