Dave Danforth Marquee

b. March 7, 1890 · Philadelphia Athletics 1911–1912, Chicago White Sox 1916–1919, St. Louis Browns 1922–1925

He scuffed the ball with a piece of emery paper sewn into his glove until an umpire found it during a 1916 game and the league confiscated the glove. He led the American League with nine saves in 1917 for the White Sox club that won the World Series, and pitched in that Series too.

When the American League banned trick pitches after the 1920 season, it let each club name pitchers who could keep throwing what they already threw for the rest of their careers; Danforth, by then relying on a legal spitball, was one of seventeen men named across both leagues.

Ten seasons gave him 71 wins against 66, a 3.89 earned run average, 1,186 innings, 43 complete games and 23 saves. St. Louis had him for his last four years, and he was still winning games in 1925 at thirty-five on pitches half the league could no longer legally throw. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1970, at eighty.
