Homestead Grays

The Grays won nine pennants in the 21 seasons the archive holds and three World Series, in 1943, 1944 and 1948. The recorded record is 583-379. Those figures rest on the box scores that survive rather than on a complete season count: Negro Leagues games were not documented with the resources the white major leagues had, which is a fact about record-keeping and not about the standard of play.

Fourteen Hall of Famers played for the club, among them Josh Gibson, Buck Leonard, Cool Papa Bell, Oscar Charleston, Judy Johnson, Jud Wilson and Smokey Joe Williams. Gibson and Leonard batting back to back were known as the club's answer to Ruth and Gehrig, and the comparison was made at the time.

Cum Posey ran the club from 1928 and Vic Harris managed it for thirteen seasons, going 617-303. The Grays played home games at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh and at Griffith Stadium in Washington, taking the second city because the Senators drew poorly and the park was available.
