Joe Greene Marquee

Joe Greene caught for the Kansas City Monarchs in the years when Satchel Paige was pitching for them, which made him the man on the receiving end of the most famous arm in Black baseball. He was picked for East-West All-Star games in 1940 and 1942.

The war took the next two seasons; he served in the army and returned to Kansas City in 1946. Before the Monarchs he had played for the Atlanta Black Crackers, the Chicago American Giants and the Homestead Grays, and he finished with the Cleveland Buckeyes in 1948.

Born in Stone Mountain, Georgia in 1911, Greene batted .273 with 18 home runs in the 252 games for which box scores survive. His death came on July 19, 1989.
