Atlanta Black Crackers

The Black Crackers won the second half of the 1938 Negro American League season and were to meet Memphis for the championship. The series was never completed — accounts differ on whether it was money, scheduling or the weather — and no champion was recorded. Two recorded seasons at 33-43.

The club took its name from the Atlanta Crackers, the white minor-league team whose ground it rented, which is the arrangement most southern Black clubs had: they played at Ponce de Leon Park when the other club was away, and took what the schedule left.

Three men managed the club in 1938 alone, including Dick Lundy at the end of a long playing career. No Hall of Famer played here. The club moved to Indianapolis for 1939 and the Atlanta name went with the players who stayed behind, into semi-professional ball.
