Walter Cannady Marquee

Walter Cannady played first, second, third and shortstop, and a good deal of left field besides, and hit .316 while doing it — one of the higher averages in the surviving Negro Leagues record.

He started with the Cleveland Tate Stars in 1922 and was still playing in 1945, taking in the Harrisburg Giants, the New York Lincoln Giants, the Hilldale Club, the Homestead Grays and the Pittsburgh Crawfords along the way. Seven seasons with the New York Black Yankees from 1933 were his longest stay, and his All-Star selection came in 1938.

Born in Norfolk, Virginia in 1902, Cannady drove in 516 runs across 699 recorded games and died on December 3, 1981, at seventy-nine.
