Clarkson made the 1940 East–West game while playing for Newark and led his league with eight home runs. In 1942 he led in doubles with 21 and triples with five, collecting 70 hits and driving in 44 across 62 recorded games.

The surviving Negro major-league record contains 197 hits, 45 doubles, 25 home runs and 144 runs batted in across 174 games, with a .314 average. Those figures are partial because Black baseball's box scores were not preserved with the resources available to the white leagues.

Clarkson represented several Negro league clubs from 1938 through 1946. Boston finally gave him a National League opportunity in 1952, when he was thirty-seven. He played 14 games, collecting five hits and one run batted in. His combined recognized record spans six seasons and 188 games. He died in 1989, at seventy-three.
