Newark Eagles

The Eagles played 13 seasons and won the Negro World Series in 1946, beating the Kansas City Monarchs and Satchel Paige. The recorded record is 365-292, which rests on surviving box scores rather than a complete count of games — Negro Leagues baseball was not documented with the resources the white major leagues had.

Seven Hall of Famers played here: Monte Irvin, Larry Doby, Ray Dandridge, Willie Wells, Mule Suttles, Biz Mackey and Leon Day. Irvin, Doby and Dandridge were on the 1946 club together. Doby went to Cleveland the following year as the first Black player in the American League, and Irvin joined the New York Giants in 1949.

Effa Manley co-owned the club with her husband Abe and ran its business, and in 2006 she became the only woman elected to the Hall of Fame. Biz Mackey managed for eight seasons, going 173-122. Home was Ruppert Stadium, which the club shared with a white minor-league team and rented from a brewer.
