Charlie Beverly pitched left-handed for the Kansas City Monarchs across most of the 1930s, the decade in which the club ran its own portable lighting system and played night games years before the major leagues tried it.
He had started with the Birmingham Black Barons in 1925 and spent 1932 divided between the Cleveland Stars and the Pittsburgh Crawfords before settling in Kansas City. Later stops with the Newark Eagles and the Philadelphia Stars preceded a final Monarchs season in 1939.
Born in Walker County, Texas in 1900, Beverly compiled a 16-21 record with 22 complete games in the surviving record. He was eighty when he died, in March 1981.
