He caught 733 games, more than he played anywhere else by a wide margin, though he turned up at shortstop, third base, first base and in the outfield when a club needed him there. Across twenty-two seasons in the counted leagues, from 1920 to 1947, he had 961 hits and batted .325 over 870 recorded games, leading his league in hits and in runs batted in in 1923.

Four further seasons in independent ball, worth another 204 hits, fall outside the count. He was chosen for six East-West All-Star games. The record is partial for the reason all Negro Leagues records are partial: these statistics were not kept with the resources the white major leagues had.

He managed the Newark Eagles, and the two catchers who learned the position from him were Roy Campanella and Larry Doby, both of whom went on to the major leagues while he did not. He was fifty when the color line fell. The Hall of Fame elected him in 2006 through the special Negro Leagues committee, forty-one years after he died.
