The 1926 season was the best of them: 32 home runs, 152 hits and the league lead in both, plus the lead in triples and in runs batted in. He led in runs batted in again in 1931 and 1932, in doubles twice and in triples twice. His high in runs batted in was 130, in a league whose schedule ran to a fraction of a major-league year.

Across twenty-one seasons from 1924 he had 1,111 hits, 183 home runs and 899 runs batted in over 922 recorded games, batting .340. He played 594 games at first base and 359 in the outfield, and was chosen for five East-West All-Star games. Two earlier seasons in independent ball fall outside the count.

He was a big man and the crowds came to see him hit, which is most of what has survived about him in words. The Hall of Fame elected him in 2006 through the special Negro Leagues committee, forty years after he died.
