Only Josh Gibson, Ty Cobb, Oscar Charleston, Rogers Hornsby and Joe Jackson are ahead of him. He had 1,105 hits, 81 home runs and 731 runs batted in over 924 recorded games from 1923 to 1945, led his league in doubles in 1927 and 1928 and in stolen bases in 1926, and was chosen for three East-West All-Star games.

He played 470 games at third base and 456 at first, and the accounts of his fielding are less flattering than those of his hitting. Five further seasons in independent ball, worth another 246 hits, fall outside the count.

He had a reputation for a temper that got him thrown out of games and into fights, and it followed him into the arguments about why he waited so long. The Hall of Fame elected him in 2006 through the special Negro Leagues committee, forty-three years after he died.
