Newt Allen

Newt Allen Marquee

Newt Allen played second base for the Kansas City Monarchs for the better part of twenty-three years, which made him the constant in a franchise that won pennants across three decades. He was celebrated for his hands and for a throw he sometimes made underhanded from his knees.

Brief spells with the St. Louis Stars, the Homestead Grays, the Chicago American Giants and the Clowns interrupted the Kansas City run, and he managed the Monarchs for a time as well. Five East-West All-Star selections came between 1936 and 1943.

Born in Austin, Texas in 1901, Allen batted .286 with 1,140 hits and 166 stolen bases in the surviving record, playing his last recorded game in 1947. Allen lived to eighty-seven, dying on June 9, 1988.

Seasons outside MLB's recognized major leagues appear in All seasons, but not in Major leagues or the leaderboards. For Newt Allen, that is 1933–1936. Why totals can differ.
