Memphis Red Sox

The Red Sox won the Negro American League's first-half pennant in 1938 and played 20 seasons at a recorded 557-781. As with every Negro Leagues club those totals rest on surviving box scores rather than a complete count of games.

The club was owned by B. B. and W. S. Martin, brothers and both physicians, who built Martin Park for it in 1929. Owning the ground mattered: most Negro Leagues clubs rented from white owners and played only when the tenant club was on the road, which dictated their schedules and took a share of the gate.

Five Hall of Famers appear on the club's rosters — Bill Foster, Willie Wells, Satchel Paige, Buck O'Neil and Josh Gibson — several of them briefly, because players moved between clubs and to Latin America far more freely than in the white leagues. Larry Brown, a catcher, managed for seven seasons.
