Emery Adams was a pitcher who could hit, which in the Negro Leagues generally meant you played the outfield on the days you were not pitching. The surviving record has him at .345 across 152 games and 28-25 with 26 complete games on the mound.
He came up with the Memphis Red Sox, spent four seasons with the Baltimore Elite Giants beginning in 1939 — his All-Star year was 1940 — and finished with the New York Black Yankees, by which point he was listed as a right fielder rather than a pitcher.
Born in Collierville, Tennessee in 1911, Adams died on January 22, 1955, at forty-three, the youngest death among the players on this archive's Negro Leagues roll.
