1908
Born January 13, 1908
Decatur, AL, USA
Alonzo Boone pitched for the Cleveland Buckeyes through the club's best years in the mid-1940s, when they won the 1945 Negro World Series, and later managed them. His career had begun sixteen years earlier with the Memphis Red Sox.
The clubs in between were mostly Cleveland's, under a succession of names — the Cleveland Cubs, the Cleveland Bears, the Cincinnati-Cleveland Buckeyes — with a spell at Birmingham during the war years, when rosters across the Negro American League were thinned by military service.
Born in Decatur, Alabama in 1908, Boone compiled a 16-13 record with 16 complete games and three shutouts in the games for which box scores survive. He died on April 8, 1982, at seventy-four.
