Cowan Hyde Marquee

b. April 10, 1907 · Memphis Red Sox 1927, 1938–1948, Birmingham Black Barons 1930, Cincinnati Tigers 1937, Indianapolis Athletics 1937

Hyde led his Negro league with 10 stolen bases in 1942. Across 31 recorded games that year, he also collected 38 hits, scored 25 runs, drove in 15 and hit .299. He was later selected for the 1943 and 1946 East–West games.

The surviving Negro major-league record contains 261 hits, 29 doubles, 24 triples, 103 runs batted in, 150 runs and a .266 average across 249 games. Hyde stole 52 bases and played primarily in the outfield. These totals are partial because many Black baseball box scores were not preserved.

Hyde's recorded career centered on the Memphis Red Sox and extends from 1927 through 1948. He also appeared for the Birmingham Black Barons, Cincinnati Tigers and Indianapolis Athletics. His best preserved average came in 1943, when he hit .311 with 33 hits and 17 runs across 26 games. Hyde died in 2003, at ninety-six.
