Bill Harvey pitched left-handed in a league where that was scarce, and it kept him employed for more than a decade across several clubs, including the Baltimore Elite Giants and the Homestead Grays.
His two East-West All-Star selections came four years apart, in 1939 and 1943. He pitched for the Monroe Monarchs and Memphis Red Sox before four seasons with the Pittsburgh Crawfords, then followed the Crawfords franchise to Toledo and Indianapolis and spent his last years with the Baltimore Elite Giants. The record that survives credits him with 33 complete games, which in an era of short rosters measured necessity as much as quality.
Born in Clarksdale, Mississippi in 1908, Harvey compiled a 24-38 record with 241 strikeouts in the games that were scored. Harvey died on March 3, 1989, twenty days before his eighty-first birthday.
