Johnny Vander Meer threw a no-hitter for the Cincinnati Reds against the Boston Bees on June 11, 1938, winning 3–0.
Boston Bees
The club took the Bees name in 1936 after a newspaper contest, the owners hoping a change would sell tickets following a 38-115 season under the Braves name. It did not: five seasons at 355-406, none of them winning, and the name went back to Braves in 1941.
The best season is 1937, at 79-73 — the closest the club came to even. The worst is 1939, at 63-88. Braves Field was renamed the Beehive for the duration.
Casey Stengel managed three of the five seasons at 205-250, a decade before the Yankees hired him and won ten pennants with him. Bill McKechnie managed the first two. Two Hall of Famers played here, Al Lopez and Al Simmons, both near the ends of their careers.
