He hit 183 hits with 12 home runs and 120 runs batted in for Philadelphia in 1948, by far the best season of his career, at thirty-one. He had bounced from Boston to the Yankees to the Athletics in his twenties without ever holding a regular job before that year.

Thirteen seasons gave him 956 hits, 181 doubles, 404 runs batted in and a .279 average, with 861 games at third base for seven organizations. He was traded or sold seven times across his career, rarely settling anywhere for more than three years.

He finished with Baltimore in 1955 at thirty-eight. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1991, at seventy-four.
