Eddie Miller Marquee

b. November 26, 1916 · Cincinnati Reds 1936–1937, 1943–1947, Boston Bees 1939–1940, Boston Braves 1941–1942, Philadelphia Phillies 1948–1949, St. Louis Cardinals 1950

He was chosen for eight All-Star teams between 1939 and 1947 while batting .238 for his career, which says plainly what the selections were for. He played 1,395 of his 1,510 games at shortstop. Fourteen seasons gave him 1,270 hits, 97 home runs and 640 runs batted in.

The bat was not nothing. In 1947, at thirty, he led the National League in doubles with 38 and had his best year at the plate, 146 hits and 87 runs batted in. That was the only time he led a league in anything at all.

He came up with Cincinnati in 1936, spent four years in Boston, went back to Cincinnati for five more, and finished with Philadelphia and St. Louis. He never appeared on a Hall of Fame ballot, in any year, by any committee. Eight All-Star selections and not one vote is a gap the .238 goes most of the way toward explaining. He died at eighty.
