b. June 10, 1905 · Boston Red Sox 1926–1932, New York Yankees 1932–1934, Cincinnati Reds 1935, Boston Braves 1935, 1943, Boston Bees 1936–1939, Pittsburgh Pirates 1940, Washington Senators 1941

He wore glasses on the mound in the 1920s and 1930s, which almost nobody did, and pitched for Red Sox clubs that lost 100 games three times while he was there. He went 132-159 with a 3.96 earned run average across 2,706 innings and 158 complete games.

His best season came for the other Boston club: 17-13 with a 2.87 earned run average for the 1936 Bees, at thirty-one. He also went 16-10 for the 1932 Yankees after they bought him in June, and pitched in that World Series.

He coached baseball at Bowdoin College for twenty years afterward. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1972, at sixty-seven.
