Johnny Riddle caught 98 major league games spread across six seasons and nineteen calendar years — one game for the White Sox in 1930, a handful for Boston and Washington in 1937, then Cincinnati during the war and a final appearance for Pittsburgh at forty-two.
Almost all of the rest was spent in the minor leagues, where he caught for the better part of two decades, and afterwards he coached in the majors for another fifteen years with Cincinnati, Milwaukee and Philadelphia.
Born in Clinton, South Carolina in 1905, Riddle batted .238 with 51 hits. His younger brother Elmer pitched for the Reds and led the National League in earned run average in 1941. Riddle reached ninety-three, and died in December 1998.
