Tony Cuccinello Marquee

b. November 8, 1907 · Cincinnati Reds 1930–1931, Brooklyn Dodgers 1932–1935, Boston Bees 1936–1940, New York Giants 1940, Boston Braves 1942–1943, Chicago White Sox 1943–1945

In 1945, in his sixteenth season, he hit .3085 for the White Sox. Snuffy Stirnweiss of the Yankees hit .3085 as well and won the title by four ten-thousandths of a point, a hit he got on the last day. Chicago released Cuccinello that winter and he never played again.

Fifteen seasons gave him 1,729 hits, 334 doubles, 884 runs batted in and a .280 average, with three All-Star selections. He drove in 94 runs for Brooklyn in 1934 and 93 for Cincinnati in 1931, and hit .315 in 1935.

His brother Al played for the Giants, and in 1935 the two of them faced each other in a game, which brothers rarely did then. He coached for the White Sox, Indians and Tigers for twenty-two years afterward. Two writers' ballots gave him one vote and then three. He died in 1995, at eighty-seven.
