On May 25, 1935, pitching for Pittsburgh, he gave up Ruth's 713th home run and then his 714th, which cleared the right-field roof at Forbes Field — the first ball hit out of that park, and the last Ruth ever hit. Ruth retired six days later. Bush said afterward that he had never seen a ball hit like it and was glad to have been there.

Seventeen seasons gave him 176 wins against 136 with a 3.86 earned run average, 2,722 innings and 151 complete games. He won 18 games in 1929 for the pennant-winning Cubs, 19 in 1932 and 20 in 1933, and led the National League in saves twice at a time when relief work was what a starter did between starts.

He was from Aberdeen, Mississippi, was called the Mississippi Mudcat, and came back at forty-three in 1945 when the wartime rosters were thin. The 1956 ballot gave him two votes of 193. He died in 1985, at eighty-three.
