Born December 21, 1972

Minnesota tried him in the rotation from 1995 to 1999 and he went 24-43 with an earned run average above six in two of those years. The bullpen saved him: from 2000 he pitched 1,042 games in relief and lasted until he was forty-two.
Twenty-one seasons gave him 127 saves, 75 wins and a 4.31 earned run average across 1,467 innings. He saved 28 games for the Cubs in 2004 and 23 for the Rockies at thirty-four, and pitched in the 2007 World Series for Colorado.
He was never an All-Star and was booed out of Chicago after two seasons; he was also, by common account, among the most decent men in the game, and clubs kept signing him for the clubhouse as much as the innings. The 2021 ballot gave him two votes of 401.
