He hit .330 with 120 hits and 20 home runs for Pittsburgh through the middle of 2008, made no All-Star team despite it, and was traded to the Yankees that July for Jeff Karstens, Ross Ohlendorf and two others — a package Pittsburgh hoped would rebuild its pitching. He hit 12 more home runs in New York's stretch run.
Twelve seasons gave him 797 hits, 159 doubles, 104 home runs, 365 runs batted in and a .268 average across eight organizations. Tommy John surgery in 2009 cost him most of two seasons and he was never quite the same hitter.
He played the outfield and first base and finished with Washington in 2012 at thirty-three. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
