Born April 28, 1935
Pinar del Río, Pinar del Río, Cuba
He lost 18 games in 1958, 19 in 1959, 18 in 1960 and 20 in 1961, leading the league every time, for Washington clubs that finished last, last, fifth and seventh. He also won 13, 11 and 11 in those seasons and had a better earned run average than several pitchers with winning records.
Fifteen seasons gave him 117 wins against 160, a 4.08 earned run average and 2,355 innings. He was Cuban, from Pinar del Río, wore cowboy clothes off the field and challenged Mickey Mantle to a footrace more than once, which Mantle declined in public and the newspapers enjoyed for years.
The Yankees bought him in September 1964 and used him in relief, where he saved 8 games in eight weeks and helped them to a pennant. He saved 55 games in all and hit 15 home runs, which for a pitcher is a great many. The 1978 ballot gave him no votes at all.
