Boston sent Nomar Garciaparra away on July 31, 2004 and got him from Montreal, which was widely called a downgrade and was not: he hit .294 for the Red Sox over two months and played the position cleanly through the postseason that ended eighty-six years of it.
Fifteen seasons gave him 2,055 hits, 459 doubles, 123 home runs, 854 runs batted in, 216 stolen bases and a .272 average, with two Gold Gloves. He played 1,843 games at shortstop for nine clubs and reached the postseason with five of them in six years.
He is Colombian, from Cartagena, and one of the two most accomplished players that country has produced. He was never an All-Star. The 2017 ballot gave him no votes at all.
