Born May 16, 1920
Paris, TX, USA
In September 1958, at thirty-eight and no longer a regular, he came off the Philadelphia bench and got a hit eight times in a row. He opened 1959 with a ninth. Nobody has strung more together across the two ends of a season.
Eighteen seasons gave him 1,700 hits, 276 doubles, 729 runs batted in and a .270 average for eight clubs. He was a switch-hitting center fielder who played 156 games and drove in 80 for the 1950 White Sox, and he was traded five times after turning thirty.
Pinch hitting was the whole job by the end, and he was good enough at it to keep getting signed at forty. He was born in Paris, Texas, and lived to ninety-one, dying in 2012. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him.
