He went 10-5 with a 2.83 earned run average for Montreal in 1979 at twenty-four and was traded to Detroit that winter for Ron LeFlore. He never had a season that good again, but he pitched fifteen years anyway, starting when a club needed a starter and relieving the rest of the time.

Fifteen seasons gave him 69 wins against 68, a 3.74 earned run average, 1,317 innings, 121 starts and 504 appearances. He hit .240 with five home runs, which for a pitcher after 1970 was worth something: managers pinch-hit him.

He was on the Minnesota club that won the 1987 World Series, pitching in three games of it. He was traded five times and released twice, and finished with Kansas City in 1991 at thirty-six. No Hall of Fame ballot has listed him.
