Bob Miller Marquee

b. February 18, 1939 · St. Louis Cardinals 1957, 1959–1961, New York Mets 1962, 1973–1974, Los Angeles Dodgers 1963–1967, Minnesota Twins 1968–1969, Cleveland Indians 1970, Chicago White Sox 1970, Chicago Cubs 1970–1971, San Diego Padres 1971, 1973, Pittsburgh Pirates 1971–1972, Detroit Tigers 1973

The original Mets carried two Bob Millers, roomed them together, and lost with both. This one went 1-12 with a 4.89 earned run average in 33 games; the other went 2-2. Casey Stengel could not keep them straight and did not pretend to.

He was better than that year suggests. Los Angeles took him in 1963 and got five seasons out of him at 2.62, 2.77, 2.89 and 2.97, working 74 games in 1964, and he was on the Dodger clubs that won the World Series in 1963 and 1965.

Seventeen seasons gave him 69 wins against 81, 51 saves, 1,551 innings and a 3.37 earned run average for ten franchises. He pitched for three clubs in 1970 and three more in 1971. He was killed in a car accident in Rancho Bernardo, California, in 1993, at fifty-four. The 1980 ballot gave him no votes.
