Worcester lasted three National League seasons at 90-159 and is remembered for one afternoon: on June 12, 1880, Lee Richmond pitched the first perfect game in the game's history against Cleveland. Five days later John Ward pitched the second, for Providence, and there was not another for 24 years.
The club drew badly — Worcester was a city of 58,000 in a league with Boston, Chicago and New York — and the league removed it along with Troy after the 1882 season. Its final home game drew a crowd reported as 25 people.
One Hall of Famer played here, John Clarkson, who pitched three games for the club in 1882 at 20, won one of them, and finished his career with 328. Home was the Worcester Driving Park Grounds, a fairground track with a diamond inside it.
