Born November 21, 1854
New Castle, PA, USA
He caught for fifteen seasons, mostly for Detroit, at a time when catchers wore little protective equipment and many careers ended in a handful of years from the physical toll. He hit .256 across his career with 978 hits, and his best offensive years came early, with 90 and 94 hits in 76 and 91 games in the early 1880s.
Fifteen seasons gave him 978 hits, 203 doubles, 549 runs batted in and 478 walks across 1,062 games, with 954 of them behind the plate. He retired after the 1893 season, and that January, while boarding a train in Kansas, he slipped and fell beneath the wheels, losing both legs.
Detroit named its new ballpark Bennett Park in his honor in 1896, and he attended games there on crutches for years afterward. A committee gave him three votes in 1936. He died in 1927, at seventy-two.
