Bushong's largest season came with the St. Louis Browns in 1886. He caught through a 107-game schedule, collected a career-high 86 hits, scored 56 runs, stole 12 bases and drew 31 walks.
Twelve recognized major-league seasons gave him 511 hits, 58 doubles, 184 runs batted in, 287 runs and a .214 average across 671 games. He caught 668 games and appeared only 11 times at other positions. His two career home runs came in separate seasons.
Before the National League began, Bushong appeared once for the Brooklyn Atlantics in the 1875 National Association and had three hits in five at bats; the archive keeps that record separate. He later played for Philadelphia, Worcester, Cleveland and St. Louis before three seasons with Brooklyn. His final appearance came in 1890. He died in 1908, at fifty-one.
