Clinton's largest recognized season came with Baltimore in 1883. He hit .313 with 125 hits, 69 runs and 27 walks across 94 games. The next year brought 118 hits, four home runs and a career-high 82 runs in 104 games.

Six recognized major-league seasons gave him 393 hits, 38 doubles, 19 triples, four home runs, 224 runs and a .264 average across 368 games. His fielding record centered on the outfield, though he also appeared at third base, second base and pitcher.

Clinton had already played four National Association seasons from 1872 through 1875. That separately listed record contains 45 hits, seven doubles, 12 runs batted in and a .197 average across 58 games. He managed the 1872 Brooklyn Eckfords to an 0-11 record, then later represented Louisville, Worcester, Baltimore and Cincinnati. He died in 1921, at seventy-one.
