Seventeen seasons gave him 1,904 hits, 363 doubles, 231 stolen bases and a .258 average across 2,108 games, 2,053 of them at shortstop. Eleven clubs used him; San Francisco had the first five years and St. Louis traded Ozzie Smith's job to him in 1996.

He was an All-Star in 1997 and played in the postseason with four different clubs. He is one of a small number of shortstops to have played 2,000 games at the position.

He played Miguel Tejada in the 2011 film of Moneyball, having been a teammate of nobody involved, which is the sort of thing a long career leads to. The 2013 ballot gave him no votes at all.
