Born August 15, 1981
Culiacan, Sinaloa, México
He went 12-10 with a 2.98 earned run average and 239 strikeouts for Pittsburgh in 2004, at twenty-two, and looked like the best young left-hander in the league. Within two years he had a 6.63 earned run average and was traded. The Mets got one good season out of him — 15-10 in 2007 — signed him for three years and $36 million, and watched him go 3-9 with an earned run average near seven.
He was out of the majors in 2011. Seattle brought him back in 2012 as a reliever who faced left-handed hitters and little else, and that job lasted until 2022. Twenty seasons gave him 74 wins against 94, 1,546 strikeouts in 1,465 innings and 703 appearances.
He is from Culiacán, Mexico, and pitched for Mexico in three World Baseball Classics. His last major-league appearance came at forty. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
