Thirteen organizations employed him across fifteen seasons, which only a handful of pitchers have matched. He struck out 1,143 men in 951 innings — better than ten per nine — saved 109 games and had a 3.78 earned run average, and was traded seven times.
Houston had his best years, including 2004, when he saved 14 games there and 22 more for Oakland after the deadline. He won the World Series with St. Louis in 2011, pitching in five games of it at thirty-seven.
He was Dominican, from Santo Domingo. On April 8, 2025 the roof of the Jet Set nightclub in that city collapsed during a concert and he was among the more than two hundred people killed. He was fifty-one.
