He appeared in 1,178 games across nineteen seasons, which is second on the all-time list behind Jesse Orosco. He pitched 74 in 1991, 79 in 2001, 80 in 2004 — a left-hander used for one or two hitters a night, a role that no longer exists.

Six of the seasons were with the Yankees, who won the World Series in 1998, 1999 and 2000 and reached two more. He pitched 53 postseason games in all, more than anyone had, and won the title with Atlanta in 1995 as well.

Nineteen seasons gave him 84 saves, 68 wins and a 3.92 earned run average. He was an All-Star in 2001. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
