Born April 21, 1957
Santa Barbara, CA, USA
Nobody has appeared in more games: 1,252, ahead of Mike Stanton's 1,178 and John Franco's 1,119. He pitched twenty-four seasons, from 1979 to 2003, which spans the careers of most of the men he faced, and he was forty-six in the last of them.
He struck out Marty Barrett to end the 1986 World Series and threw his glove into the air, which is the photograph. He had saved 21 games that season for the Mets and won the seventh game of the Championship Series in relief.
The later years were spent as a left-hander brought in to face one or two hitters, a role the game created around men like him and abolished in 2020. He saved 144 games in all with a 3.16 earned run average. The 2009 ballot gave him one vote of 539.
