Born October 8, 1959

Oakland drafted him fourth overall in June 1978 and started him in a major-league game four days later, without a minor-league inning. He was eighteen, lost that game and the next one, and did not win in the major leagues until he was twenty-three.
Twenty-two seasons gave him 141 wins against 186, a 4.23 earned run average, 2,772 innings and 597 appearances. He was an All-Star in 1991, when he went 14-10 with a 2.78 earned run average for the Dodgers, and led the National League in shutouts in 1990.
Twelve organizations employed him, which puts him among the handful of pitchers who have worn that many uniforms. He was still pitching at forty-two, for Arizona, in the 2001 season it won the World Series. No Hall of Fame ballot has listed him.
