Maddux began as a starter with Philadelphia, making 11 starts in 1988, but found his best season after moving to San Diego's bullpen. In 1991 he appeared in 64 games, went 7-2 with five saves and posted a 2.46 earned run average across 98 innings.
Fifteen seasons gave him a 39-37 record, 20 saves, 564 strikeouts and a 4.05 earned run average in 861 innings. Only 48 of his 472 appearances were starts, and he completed two of them. His work as a reliever carried him across both leagues and nine organizations.
He spent his first four seasons with the Phillies, then changed clubs in eleven of the next twelve years. That path included Pittsburgh and Boston during 1995, Montreal and Los Angeles during 1999, and a final season with Houston in 2000. He never made an All-Star team or appeared on a Hall of Fame ballot.
