b. May 29, 1976 · Baltimore Orioles 1998–2004, Chicago Cubs 2005–2006, Texas Rangers 2006–2007, Cincinnati Reds 2008–2009, New York Yankees 2009, San Diego Padres 2010, Washington Nationals 2011, Milwaukee Brewers 2011, Los Angeles Dodgers 2012–2013

His grandfather Sam caught in the Negro Leagues and briefly for the White Sox; his father Jerry Hairston played fourteen seasons for the White Sox. Jerry was Baltimore's regular second baseman for seven years before moving from club to club and position to position for the rest of his career.

Sixteen seasons gave him 1,126 hits, 233 doubles, 580 runs batted in, 147 stolen bases and a .257 average, with 650 games at second base, 400 in the outfield, 174 at third and 148 at shortstop. He hit .326 for Cincinnati in 2008 and was as valuable off the bench for the Yankees and Dodgers a few years later.

He won World Series rings with the Yankees in 2009 and the Dodgers were paying him when they reached the 2013 League Championship Series, his last season. His brother Scott also played in the majors, making three Hairstons active at once for parts of several years. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
